Dawon crossover arts searching for the roots of dance and music
Yeongran Suh is a Korean artist working in the so-called "Dawon" field of crossover arts. After specializing in traditional dance when a student, Suh moved into Dawon after feeling uncomfortable with studying merely the inheritance of an art form. This performance takes us closer to the roots of dance and music, starting from research into pre-modern arts and exploring the shamanism that lies in the background of Korean theatre, as well as the vocal art form of pansori. Hypothesizing that these fragments continued to exist in contemporary society in a different form, Suh conducted street surveys. The actual performance that results is intense and suggests to audiences how dance is more than just dancing beautifully.
