Leading talent from Myanmar’s emerging contemporary art scene

Myanmar is currently experiencing rapid change as it transitions to democracy and receives foreign investment. The performance artist Moe Satt is one of the leaders of the emerging arts scene which has been creating work about life under the junta and the new evolution of the nation. Satt presents a mini omnibus of work, drawing on his previous performance art and video works created during the time of the military government, and complemented by a new theatre work. A major motif is “hands” and other forms of non-verbal communication, tools vital during a time of censorship and repression. This symbol is both born out of the context of Myanmar’s recent history and is also universal to all.
