A double theatrical experience unravelling the mystery of the "Yotsuya Kaidan"
Director Shigeki Nakano and dramaturge Kaku Nagashima have lit the fringe theatre world on fire with their dynamic "free mistranslations" of overseas plays, and now they turn their attention to one of Japan's most famous ghost stories, "Yotsuya Kaidan", to create a pair of linked promenade theatre performances. "Yotsuya Zotanshu" is based on the original text that inspired the "Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan" by Nanboku Tsuruya, and will be a guided tour of the Yotsuya and Shinjuku areas where the story is set. The second work then transports the tale to modern day Tokyo. Harnessing a range of media and disciplines, from film to illustration, photography and architecture, audiences will have a unique multi-layered drama experience as they tour the urban space.
For this performance audiences will tour various sites with a special text (Japanese only). Each work has its own text. It forms the guide for navigating the tour so everyone will receive a copy. Audiences are recommended to read it in advance to get the most out of the performances. Audiences who purchase tickets by October 31 will receive their book by post (addresses in Japan only).
