A radical modern take on the classic kabuki play
Kinoshita-Kabuki has made a name for itself for exploring new possibilities in traditional stage arts. Based in Kyoto and Yokohama, this is their F/T debut, a twenty-strong cast presenting a full six-hour staging of the masterpiece, "Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan". This complete ensemble version will spotlight the episodes in the supporting cast often cut from contemporary stagings, bringing the tale of Oiwa even more to life for audiences. Also featuring contributions from Japanese theatre veterans such as former Tenjo Sajiki actress Yoko Ran and stage designer Jiro Shima, the cross-generational project's ambitions know no bounds.
A special "Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan" free paper will be released in early October. Audio commentaries on the production will be released online three times: 10/14 (Mon), 10/21 (Mon), 10/28 (Mon). Kinoshita-Kabuki's July 2012 staging of "Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees" will also be available for viewing on YouTube from 10/30 (Wed) to 11/1 (Fri). Further information on talk events and supplementary online content will be announced on the Kinoshita-Kabuki website.
