Toshiki Okada's much-discussed post-Fukushima fable premières in Tokyo
Toshiki Okada has carved out a name among Japanese theatre artists of his generation for his portrayals of contemporary ennui through the dynamic use of language and physicality in his plays. His work has been performed in America and all over Europe, and now his much-discussed Fukushima-inspired play "Current Location" ("Genzaichi") finally makes its première in Tokyo. It tells the allegorical tale of the peculiar foreboding that emerges when one day a blue cloud appears. Seven women talk about the situation: Do we believe the rumours? Or do we not? Do we escape? Or do we stay? Okada's production is a total theatrical experience of lighting, music and design, creating a metaphorical representation of life in Japan today. The dialogue has a quasi-"written" feel, as if something isn't quite right. One year on from its debut, this modern day science fiction play still retains its power more than ever.
