Saburo Teshigawara Dancer / director

Saburo Teshigawara began his career in 1981 in his native Tokyo after studying plastic arts and classical ballet. In 1985, he formed the company KARAS together with Kei Miyata. Since then, they have been invited every year to perform in major international cities around the world. In addition to solo performances and his work with KARAS, Teshigawara has also been receiving international attention as a choreographer and director. He has been commissioned by many international ballet companies such as the Paris Opera to create repertoire pieces for the company. Teshigawara has likewise received increasing international attention in the field of visual arts, with art exhibitions, films / videos as well as designing scenography, lighting and costumes for all his performances. Among his most representative works are "Mirror and Music" (2009), "Obsession" (2009), "MIROKU" (2007), and "Glass Tooth" (2006). He has received numerous awards. Among them are the Prix du Public at the Festival International de Nouvelle Danse in Montreal, Canada (1989, 1991 and 1995), the Munich Dance Critic Award (1993), the Japan Culture Art Award (1994), the Japan Dance Critic Award (2000), the Japan Ministry of Culture Art Encouragement Prize (2007), the 2007 New York Dance and Performance (aka The Bessies) Award, and Purple Ribbon Prize (2009).
