The director of “Transfer Student” now takes on Sarah Kane’s valedictory

Director Norimizu Ameya stunned audiences with his “Transfer Student” in F/T09 Spring and for the autumn festival he will be presenting Sarah Kane’s “4.48 Psychosis”. Kane made an unforgettable debut with her play “Blasted” and in her short career produced numerous portraits of violence and sex. In this play she explores the world of mental disease. The unique script is composed of fragments of monologues and dialogues, a text in which a clear story, in which stage directions and even the cast seem to vanish underneath the enumerated numbers and words. This is a bold depiction of mental illness where the clear divide between yourself and others retreats, and you move inevitably towards death.

Ameya has traversed many careers, in the theatre, in art, music and even a pet shop. Now he will offer his interpretation of Kane’s difficult text. He will make use of various kinds of media to expose and visualize the uncertainty and mystery in our daily lives. Kane’s highly private and internal account of her mental illness will be passed through Ameya’s filter, becoming more universal for audiences – and more real.
