English Surtitles & Performances for International Audiences
Do you want to see some of the performances at F/T12 but worry about the language barrier?
We often hear this from our international audiences but actually there are plenty of performances with surtitles. There are also many productions that are performed in languages like German or Korean, or are otherwise comprehensible no matter what level your Japanese is.
Here is a summary of which productions we recommend for non-Japanese speaking audiences to Festival/Tokyo.
No Dialogue
Potudo-ru's acclaimed
"Castle of Dreams" is a wordless play, and
"Le Préau d'un Seul" by Jean Michel Bruyère / LFKs is an installation piece without dialogue.
Meanwhile,
"DAH-DAH-SKO-DAH-DAH" by Saburo Teshigawara and
"Co-Lab: Seoul-Berlin" are dance works.
We also recommend the
F/T Mob events, a series of flash mob interactive dance performances in Ikebukuro. All you need is a body and the ability to move!
Surtitled
"The Absence of Neighbor Jimmy" will have English surtitles at performances, as will
"Beautiful Star",
"permanent value" and
"Chimaira girl anthem/120days SHOGI" from the F/T Emerging Artists Program.
Performed in Other Languages
Also from the Emerging Artists Program,
"Gay Romeo" will be performed in English, and
"The Bionarration of a Disjointed Body!" is likely to be universal (and it is free to attend).
German-speakers will also be able to enjoy
"Rechnitz (Der Würgeengel)", and is
"Crisis Trilogy III: The Priestess" in Hungarian and
"Where were you on January 8th?" in Iranian.
Koreans will be able to understand
"Step Memories - Return of the Oppressed", and there are also several other Korean or Chinese-language performances in the
Emerging Artists Program.
